Abstract
OPEN SCIENCE CHECKLIST FOR LEARNED SOCIETIES is a memorandum designed to support learned societies in addressing themes related to open science and research. Open science aims to update the practices of openness—an essential element of science itself—to fit the digital operating environment. This checklist is intended both to raise awareness about the role of learned societies in open science and to support the development of societies’ practices where there is interest and capacity to adapt operations from an open science perspective. In addition to an introduction and a Contributors chapter, the checklist consists of three thematic sections: culture of open scholarship in learned societies, open publishing as part of a learned society's operations, and learned societies and the openness of research data. The checklist has been compiled by members of the Open Science for Learned Societies working group during the years 2023–2025. The working group includes members from various learned societies as well as staff from the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies.
