Abstract
<jats:p>The conventional understanding of lightning generation attributes charge separation primarily to intra-cloud friction (triboelectric effect) involving ice particles and graupel. This paper presents an integrated alternative framework. We hypothesize that the atmosphere exhibits a vertical electrostatic potential gradient where static charge density increases with altitude. Clouds, acting as large-scale macroscopic conductors, accumulate this ambient charge on their outer surfaces due to electrostatic distribution laws. Furthermore, we propose a two-phase discharge mechanism: Initiation Phase: Falling precipitation creates highly localized, high-density droplet paths that significantly lower the local dielectric breakdown threshold of air.</jats:p>
