The article examines the concept of the ‘man the traveler’, which reflected in culture and philosophy as wayfarer and homo viator. Tolstoy’s image is closely associated with Yasnaya Polyana, his family estate in the Krapivensky district of Tula. However, it would be a mistake to consider him a homebody. The article focuses on the part of Tolstoy’s life that involved his numerous travels and journeys. This travel experience formed the basis of his artistic works and philosophical reflections. Human life is a constant process of movement, where many choices and efforts remain with the individual. According to the thinker, people have the ability and even propensity for exploring their individuality and subjectivity through the realization of their own existence, and only then to go beyond their own selves.
