Abstract
This report provides a comprehensive review of 59 peer-reviewed studies of multiskilling in construction published from 1998 through 2026. It organizes nearly three decades of research on cost, schedule, productivity, staffing, worker development, training, implementation, and skill combinations, while distinguishing evidence measured in practice from findings generated through models, simulations, optimization, and hypothetical scenarios. The review finds that 95% of studies described multiskilling as valuable or potentially beneficial, and none concluded that it was disadvantageous across the outcomes or conditions examined. At the same time, only 24% used inferential statistical testing, more than half relied on modeling without field-verified inputs, and no prior study directly measured project-performance effects on an active U.S. construction project or compared multiskilled and single-skilled crews completing the same work sequence. The report offers an evidence map for practitioners and researchers and identifies priorities for future field-based study.
