Abstract
This companion brief examines the safety context surrounding a nationwide study of multiskilling in U.S. construction. It draws on 2024 safety data voluntarily reported by 15 participating contractors, representing approximately 33.2 million employee-hours, along with site-visit observations and a review of the potential safety relevance of work-area density and crew handoffs. The contractor sample reported an aggregate TRIR of 0.74, a DART rate of 0.35, an hours-weighted EMR of approximately 0.60, and no fatalities. These rates compared favorably with national and NAICS-weighted construction benchmarks, and participating firms commonly reported structured safety planning, orientation, training, incident investigation, and toolbox meetings. The brief is intentionally cautious: it is not a safety audit and does not claim that multiskilling caused better safety performance. Instead, it documents the safety environment of the sample and identifies priorities for direct future research on qualification, hazard awareness, work-area density, and task-level outcomes.
