Abstract
<jats:p>This article examines the specifics of customs service in the Russian Federation as an independent type of civil service. Based on a historical review and a study of the functions of customs authorities, the author advances the thesis regarding the complexity and comprehensiveness of the legal status of customs authorities and their officials. Based on an analysis of the current legal regulation of customs service and the draft Federal Law "On Customs Authorities of the Russian Federation" (bill), the author concludes that such regulation needs to be updated. The article analyzes the most significant amendments to the draft law, including those related to the concept of customs service, its relationship with the state civil service, strengthening social and other guarantees for customs officials, and codifying the principles of customs service.</jats:p>
