Abstract

Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs), a nano-scaled synthesized graphenebased particle, offer unique chemical, physical, and biomedical applications. In addition, due to their exceptional electronic structure, biocompatibility, tunable band gap, excellent optical, electronic, and magnetic properties, these nanoparticles have been successfully exploited in cancer treatment, drug delivery, bioimaging, and biosensing fields of concern. Besides, due to the presence of oxygen-containing functional groups and water solubility, GQDs hold significant promise in a wide range of wastewater treatment applications, making them crucial for future technological advancements. In this regard, herein we have this chapter, which focuses on GQDs and their applications in pollutant degradation in wastewater treatment. The chapter outlines a brief introduction followed by a discussion of various features and properties of GQDs, their synthesis and functionalization, and the underlying mechanisms for eliminating pollutants like organic dyes, heavy metals, and microbial decontamination. Finally, other applicable areas, the current challenges, and future scopes of GQDs have also been explored.
