Video Tutorials of the Shor Language as a Type of Virtual Pedagogical Discourse

<jats:p>The Shor language belongs to the North-Eastern branch of Turkic languages. It is spoken by the indigenous population of the Kemerovo Region. This article describes the constitutive features of Shor language video tutorials, their didactic potential, and their effectiveness. A video lesson is viewed as a situation of speech interaction between the teacher and students, which is determined by the spatial-temporal and information-digital reality of a symbolic virtual environment. As the role of digital technologies in education continues to grow, communicative linguistics turns to analyzing speech behavior in computer-mediated education. The way video lessons represent Shor ethno-cultural specificity influences the motivation for language learning. The author studied the contextual features of Shor language video tutorials as a type of virtual pedagogical discourse in order to characterize its multimodal components (speech, video, graphics, etc.) and analyze its speech strategies. Ten video tutorials from the website of the Kemerovo Regional Association of the Shor People were subjected to discursive, multimodal, communicative, and ethno-linguistic analysis, combined with content analysis of the video materials. The video format proved to make the explanatory discourse more accessible, visual, compact, and easy to display. As an effective model of interaction between the teacher and students, it provided positive emotional contact, formal feedback, and good progress. The same video format can be used to develop video lessons for the Teleut language, spoken by another minority population group in the Kemerovo Region.</jats:p>
