Abstract

This article examines the reflection of the category of violence in Augustine’s Contra Faustum Manichaeum (Against Faustus the Manichean). Drawing on the bishop’s arguments, the author attempts to answer the following questions: Does Augustine admit violence in principle? What kinds of violence does he distinguish? Can violence be legitimate? In what cases and for the protection of what interests may it be employed? Who has the right to use it? Reflecting on these questions, the author concludes that, for the Church Father, coercion is an integral part of the world order. The need for it is conditioned by human nature itself: for some it is necessary as an instrument of correction; for others, as a means of testing virtue and confirming righteousness. The author notes that, for Augustine, the use of violence is permissible and justified whenever it serves the cause of strengthening Christianity. Conversely, an act of violence committed for purposes contrary to the interests of the Church does not meet with the bishop’s approval. The paper draws attention to the significance of the treatise Contra Faustum Manichaeum as a valuable source of knowledge about the socio-political views of the great Latin teacher of Christianity. Its study, the author concludes, is necessary for anyone who seeks to form any clear idea of Augustine’s views on politics, power, the state, and the social order.
