Abstract

The article examines the image of Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich in Old Russian texts from the 11th to early 12th c. When creating the image of the prince as a saint, some Old Russian authors (for example, for Jacob the Monk in "Memory and Praise of Prince Vladimir of Rus") faced the problem of Vladimir’s lack of miracles. This problem becomes particularly relevant in the context of the cult of St. Clement of Rome, who was called the apostle of Rus' in "Sermon on the Renovation of the Tithe Church". In Old Russian texts, starting from the end of the 1040s (when Ilaryon's "Sermon on Law and Grace" was most likely created), Vladimir was already called the apostle of Rus, and the cult of Clement has since faded away. Author suggests that the "site of memory" about Vladimir as the Apostle of Rus' was constructed with an eye to Clement's image of a miracle-worker. Author concludes that there were two strategies for working with the image of Prince Vladimir, which allowed Old Russian writers to solve the problem of the absence of obvious miracles. The first is to treat the miracle as a metaphor: the resurrection of Rus' from the death of idolatry (Ilarion). The second is to directly (Jacob) or indirectly (Ilarion) contrast the image of the miracle worker with that of a virtuous ruler, the origins of which can be found in Byzantine texts.
