Abstract

Abstract

Background- gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has become an increasingly common health problem among pregnant women in India. The increasing prevalence of this condition leads to serious risk to both mothers and their babies, if it is not identified and managed properly. Limited awareness and insufficient knowledge about GDM often result in complications such as preeclampsia, fetal macrosomia, neonatal hypoglycemia and a higher likelihood of developing Type-II Diabetes mellitus later in life. Improving maternal understanding of gestational diabetes is therefore a critical component of antenatal care. The present study was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of multicomponent teaching module (MCTM) in improving knowledge regarding gestational diabetes and its management among antenatal mother. Methods- A pre-experimental one group Pre-test Post-test research design was taken for this study. The study was conducted in a selected hospital in Bhubaneswar Odisha. 60 antenatal mothers diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus were selected using Purposive sampling technique. Baseline knowledge regarding GDM was assessed using a structured questionnaire. This was followed by the administration of a Multicomponent teaching module. Post-test knowledge was assessed after 7 days using the same questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including paired ‘t’ test and chi-square test were used for data analysis. Results- The finding shows that most of the participants were between 26-30 years of age, belongs to Rural areas, and had no formal education. The mean pre-test knowledge score indicated poor knowledge regarding gestational diabetes. Following the teaching intervention a marked improvement was observed in the post-test scores, with the majority of the mother’s good knowledge level. The paired ‘t’ test showed a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (p< 0.05) where mean knowledge scores increased from 7.5±1.81 to 18.75±2.61 (t=49.01, p<0.001). No statistically significant association was found between post-test knowledge score and selected demographic variables. Conclusions- the study findings clearly show that the Multicomponent teaching module was effective in improving knowledge regarding gestational diabetes and its management among antenatal, mothers. Incorporating structured and comprehensive educational interventions into routine antenatal services can play a vital role in preventing complications and maternal and fetal health outcomes.
