Abstract

Abstract

Entrepreneurial orientation plays a vital role in improving graduate employability and encouraging business creation, especially within healthcare professions where conventional employment opportunities are often limited. This study examined the extent to which socioeconomic and institutional factors influence entrepreneurial attitudes among radiography students in South-Eastern Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, involving 357 radiography students drawn from three universities offering radiography programs: University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN, 56.0%), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK, 33.1%), and Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO, 10.9%). Data were gathered using structured questionnaires and analyzed through descriptive statistics and Spearman rank-order correlation. The findings showed that socioeconomic factors significantly and positively influenced students’ entrepreneurial attitudes (Total WM = 3.65; r = 0.612, p < 0.05). Key contributors identified by respondents included financial security (WM = 3.96), availability of startup capital (WM = 4.02), and support from family members (WM = 3.82). Institutional factors were also significantly associated with entrepreneurial attitudes, although their influence was relatively weak (Total WM = 2.70; r = 0.234, p < 0.05). Among the institutional variables assessed, practical entrepreneurship training emerged as the only factor with a positive impact (WM = 3.51). Overall, the respondents demonstrated favorable entrepreneurial attitudes (Total WM = 3.62), indicating a strong willingness to establish radiography-related ventures (WM = 3.80) and develop innovative solutions within the profession (WM = 3.94). However, their perceived ability to successfully manage a business was only moderate (WM = 3.06). The study concludes that strengthening institutional support through mentorship programs, experiential learning opportunities, and improved access to entrepreneurial resources is necessary to complement existing socioeconomic advantages and promote sustainable entrepreneurial development among future radiography professionals.
