Abstract

<title>Abstract</title> <p>Significant volumes of liquid radioactive waste are generated throughout both the operational life and the decommissioning of nuclear facilities. Radionuclide separation followed by potential reuse represents a possibility for minimizing the total volume of such waste. This work focuses on extraction of europium, as a representative of the lanthanides, into a conventional organic solvent and ionic liquid using various extractants. Ionic liquids are liquid organic salts with a melting point under 100°C. Their unique properties, such as low vapor pressure and the ability to be designed for a specific purpose through functionalization make them a very promising alternative to conventional organic solvents in liquid extraction.</p>
