Abstract
<title>Abstract</title> <p>This review revolves around existing research on the correlation between road geometry, driver behaviour and traffic safety, with a keen observation on identifying the driver behaviour as a critical mediating mechanism. The prior research studies have primarily examined geometric design, crash-based models, and field surveys independently. While, this survey work itegrates behavioral responses within a standard geometry-behaviour-safety framework. For this study, a comprehensive and systematic review of literature from 1990 to 2025 was conducted, also including major transportation research databases. The key focus of this review paper is to incorporate behavioural variables such as speed, workload, risk perception, etc. The findings from this paper highlight the impact of behavioural adaptations, speed variability, risk perception and driver workload on geometric design influence. The findings also highlight incorporating behavioural indicators improves safety model performance by up to 30%, causing an impactful reduction of crash occurences by up to 20%, through targeted design intervetions. Thus, policy implications justify the need for behaviour-sensitive design standards, low-cost perceptual countermeasures and hybrid modelling frameworks. Key research gaps include limited real-time based behavioural data, challenges in model transferability and the need for interpretable AI-based safety enhancement. Hence, this study provides a structured foundation for advancing behaviour-centric traffic safety research and practice.</p>
