Abstract

<title>Abstract</title> <p>Sand production in oil/gas reservoirs in poorly consolidated formations is one of the most serious concerns in the petroleum industry. For more efficient sand production control, a great prediction of this phenomenon is crucial. In this paper, numerical models for one-dimensional linear and axisymmetric particle-fluid flow accounting for detachment, transport and re-adhesion of particles were presented. Also, a novel sanding criteria based on moment balance between exerting forces on a particle was developed. The numerical model for linear flow matched the experimental data with high agreement and matching parameters were used for sand production prediction in the field by rendered radial model. Moreover, sensitivity analysis on some model parameters was performed to further assessment of the model’s behavior. The results indicate large variations in porosity and permeability due to sand-erosion in the near well-bore region and also show that sand production can be significantly mitigated by reducing production rates.</p>
