Abstract

Abstract

Compulsive buying is a severe globalized phenomenon which has been observed across cultures Research has revealed a interplay between personality deficiencies and environmental factors such as a materialistic consumer culture enhancing compulsive buying. New research findings showed that specific time perspectives and low self-control also play an essential role in increasing compulsive buying. We applied the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, the short version of the German Self-Control Scale and the German Compulsive Buying Scale. We conducted hierarchical linear regressions, Structural Equation models and mediation analysis to test our hypotheses. We observed significant effects of Present-Fatalistic and Future. Further overall balanced vs. unbalanced indices were linked to compulsive buying in the predicted direction. It has been consistently found that time perspectives—as operationalized in various ways, such as individual time dimensions, as a deviation from a negative overall constellation, and as a deviation from a balanced overall constellation—exert an influence on compulsive buying, which is mediated by self-control.
