Abstract

<title>Abstract</title> <p>Background: Musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders are a major occupational hazard for procedural physicians, particularly surgeons, who often work in prolonged static, suboptimal postures while performing repetitive and technically demanding tasks. Although Urologists are particularly susceptible to MSK pain, a significant gap in the literature persists, and the influence of exercise habits and other factors on their MSK pain remains understudied. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate factors associated with work-related musculoskeletal pain among practicing urologists, with particular attention to surgical exposure and physical activity habits. Methods: This cross-sectional, survey-based observational study of practicing endourologists in the United States uses modified versions of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. Bivariate analyses and multivariable logistic regression models were used. Results: A total of 79 practicing endourologists responded to the survey and were included. Musculoskeletal symptoms were highly prevalent, with 93.7% reporting pain in at least one body region. Persistent pain was reported by 60.8%, and work limitation by 34.2%. Higher use of X-ray shields and longer duration of aerobic exercise were associated with increased MSK pain. Stretching during surgery was associated with a higher prevalence of persistent pain, although not significantly so. Persistent pain was strongly associated with work limitation. Strength training session duration was associated with reduced odds of work limitation, and each additional day of aerobic exercise per week was associated with reduced odds of lower back pain. Conclusion: Musculoskeletal pain is a universal problem among practicing endourologists and represents a significant occupational hazard. Persistent pain was strongly associated with work-related functional limitations, and modifiable behaviors were associated with protection.</p>
