Abstract
This dataset presents modeled snow depth (m) and snow water equivalent (mm) outputs from the four models included in Phase 1 of the Snow Informed Reservoir Operations (SIRO) model comparison experiment. Four models simulated the evolution of seasonal snow for water years 2023-2025 from October 1 through snow disappearance at 100-m resolution in the Mores Creek Watershed of central Idaho. The four models included in this experiment were the Hydrologic Engineering Center’s Hydrologic Model System (HEC-HMS) Gridded Temperature Index and Gridded Energy Balance, M3Works-iSnobal, and SnowModel. Models were run with and without assimilated headwater LiDAR snow depth data1. The output netCDF files are in WGS84 / UTM 11N (ESPG:32611). The HEC-HMS Temperature Index model only outputs gridded SWE , so snow depth was calculated using the density derived from the Mores Creek Summit SNOTEL (SNOTEL 637). Dataset filenames describe the model, water year, data type (where “SD” is snow depth and “SWE” is snow water equivalent), and model run (where “task1” refers to the model run without LiDAR data, and “task2” refers to the model run with assimilation or calibration to LiDAR data). For example, “iSnobal_23_SD_task1.nc” contains iSnobal snow depth outputs for water year 2023 without assimilated LiDAR data. HEC-HMS Temperature Index acronym is TI, and HEC-HMS Energy Balance acronym is EB.
