Abstract

Reports the second case in Kazakhstan of the non-lethal capture of the Long-Legged Buzzard (Buteo rufinus) nestling by Steppe Eagles (Aquila nipalensis), followed by its adoption and successful rearing, along with its own nestling, until it fledged. The reasons why natural selection has not eliminated this energy-consuming and, at first glance, useless behavior among birds of prey are discussed.
