The Role of Memorial Laws in Preserving the Memory of the Great Patriotic War

<jats:p>The article is devoted to the study of memorial legislation which plays a leading role in preserving the memory of the Great Patriotic War. The article shows that an effective memorial policy can be implemented only if there is appropriate legal support. By influencing the value orientations of citizens in terms of perception and interpretation of the official historical narrative, memory laws provide a retrospective foundation for constitutional identity and national security. With the help of legislation, the state, on the one hand, explicates the conventional image of the past formed in the social environment, on the other hand, it constructs frames of official memory. At the same time, the formalization in legislation of the image of the Great Patriotic War and the feat of the Soviet people during this period is designed to form a standard of value orientations and behavior aimed at ensuring the preservation of the existential basis of Russian civilization.</jats:p>
