The Role of the Magazine "Suchasnist`" in the Development and Confirmation of Modern Ukrainian Identity

<jats:p>The relevance of the research. The monthly magazine “Suchasnist” (modernity, contemporaneity) played a unique role in the life of both Ukrainians abroad and “mainland” Ukraine. In 2026, it will be 65 years since the first issue of the magazine was published. For 30 years, the magazine was published abroad, for 20 years – in Ukraine. Since 1961, "Suchasnists" have been carrying out a synthesis of free Ukrainian culture, both developed by Ukrainians abroad and created in Soviet Ukraine, not only by the Resistance Movement but also by spiritually independent writers, artists, and thinkers. The mission of this monthly magazine has not yet been properly understood and demonstrated. The purpose is to trace and describe with the greatest possible completeness the main stages of the formation and development of the magazine, to eliminate inaccuracies (sometimes significant) and the mythologemes accumulated in the intellectual space that do not allow us to see the real mission of “Suchasnist”, to show what was accomplished and what was not accomplished due to certain circumstances by the magazine's editorial staff, and to outline its role in the formation of new generations of Ukrainians abroad and modern Ukraine on the eve of Russian military aggression Conclusions. The monthly magazine “Suchasnist” turned to the best achievements of Ukrainian culture and science – both in the past and in the present. It was about the synthesis, integrity of Ukrainian being, about its place in the “orchestra of nations”. Since 1992, when the magazine moved to Kyiv, it has become a testing ground for the creative pursuits of the younger generation (those aged 30-40). Of particular importance is the brilliant Russian studies of “Suchasnist”, in which, literally immediately after Putin came to power, a scientifically substantiated conclusion was made about the rapid transformation of Russia into a fascist state. Thus, the deconstruction of the mythologemes accumulated in the intellectual space over the past decades does not allow us to see the real historical mission of “Suchasnist” in the creation of a modern Ukrainian identity.</jats:p>
