“…It Seems Expedient and Necessary to Preserve the Nazran District” (From the History of the Creation of the Nazran District of the Terek Region)

<jats:p>The article examines the administrative-territorial transformations that took place in the Terek region in the early 20th century. The main attention is paid to the creation of the Nazran District. The socio-economic and political reasons for the creation of this administrative unit are shown. First, they were associated with the shortage of land that arose because of the demarcation of lands after the end of the Caucasian War. As a result, most of the arable land ended up in the hands of the Terek Cossacks settled on the plain. Trying to relieve the emerging social tension and improve the quality of governance in the region, the government decided to create a new administrativeterritorial unit. The article introduces into scientific circulation for the first time documents from the funds of the Russian State Historical Archive, covering this topic.</jats:p>
