TEACHING ENGLISH AS AN ELECTIVE: MAKING THE CONVENTIONAL AND THE DIGITAL MEET, ВИКЛАДАННЯ АНГЛІЙСЬКОЇ МОВИ ЯК ВИБІР: ЗУСТРІЧ ТРАДИЦІЙНОГО ТА ЦИФРОВОГО

<jats:p>Problem statement. Nowadays, English language knowledge is an integral part of professional activity and scientific research. At Oles Honchar Dnipro National University, English language offered not only to students majoring in philology, but also to other educational fields that have access to English as an elective subject. Depending on the level of the students, they can study English at the B2 or C1 level, but, as experience shows, their background knowledge of vocabulary and grammar is not always sufficient for the effective development and improvement of language skills. This poses certain challenges for teachers, who have to search for and find the best possible approaches and materials to achieve this educational goal. Purpose of the article. The purpose of our article is to provide several practical examples of the effectiveness of content-based learning and the combination of conventional and digital materials in the process of teaching and learning English as a foreign language. The examples contain fragments of lessons offered to the students at levels B2 and C1. Research methodology and methods. The article is largely based on the authors' own teaching experience and on oral  feedback received from the students during reflection. Results. It has been shown that presenting lexical and grammatical material through the most true-to-life content significantly simplifies the understanding of lexical units and grammatical structures, encourages students to draw independent conclusions and apply them in practice. Conclusions and prospects. The combination of traditional and digital teaching methods not only ensures better acquisition of learning material by the students, but also helps to diversify the tasks provided for both group and individual accomplishment. In the future, it is expedient to further research into ways to improve and facilitate the acquisition of language material by non-language students.</jats:p>
