Abstract
<jats:p>The book characterizes the agrarian policy of all Ukrainian hetmans, beginning with Bohdan Khmelnytsky and ending with Kyrylo Rozumovsky, and analyzes how it changed under conditions of war and armed conflict over more than 100 years. It identifies and describes the most characteristic features of the activities of the "holders of the mace" regarding their attitude toward peasant and Cossack land ownership, as well as the property of high-ranking officials, monasteries, and cities. The content is filled with vivid episodes of the struggle between the Cossack elite and tsarist dignitaries in their attempts to seize as much of Ukraine's land wealth as possible and enslave the local inhabitants. Through the prism of the struggle for land, the book traces the difficulties—sometimes tragic—that took place in the Hetmanate throughout its entire existence. The book will be of interest to professional historians, legal scholars, and a wide circle of readers, as it largely reveals the general essence of interstate Ukrainian-Russian relations and the origins of the terrible troubles that exist today between the two nation.</jats:p>
