Sustainable agriculture: from historical background to future strategies

<jats:p>The monograph examines the concept of sustainability of agriculture, its components and factors using a historiographical approach, as well as an analysis of current trends in the development of the industry. In the period from the 18th century to the present, the transformation of the concept of sustainable agriculture from the narrow-production understanding of yield stability prevailing in the 19th and 20th centuries to its modern expanded concept as a target state in which food, production, economic, environmental and social goals are achieved is shown. Throughout the analyzed period, key aspects of agricultural development are identified, due to the stages of political development and socio-economic conditions of the country. An expanded understanding of sustainable agriculture as a target condition is presented. An idea is given about specific types of sustainability: food, industrial, environmental, social and economic. The factors of increasing and decreasing agricultural sustainability are identified and classified. The article describes current trends in the development of the industry, such as organic, low-carbon, precision agriculture. The genesis of these areas is shown and the contribution of each to improving the sustainability of agriculture is substantiated. It is addressed to the scientific community, specialists in agricultural economics, professional participants in the agro-industrial complex, students of economic and agricultural universities.</jats:p>
