The Digitalization of Dating Dynamics: Recent Trends and Future Directions

<jats:p>This review examines recent trends in research on the digitalization of dating dynamics in the Global North, with a particular focus on mobile dating applications (MDAs) and their transformative influence on contemporary romantic interactions. Specifically, the ways in which MDAs shape emerging adults’ dating experiences are discussed, particularly in relation to identity formation and well-being. Four key conclusions emerge. First, digital dating dynamics can have detrimental outcomes on identity formation and psychological well-being. Second, these dynamics appear to challenge traditional patterns of romantic relationship initiation and maintenance. Third, despite the widespread adoption of mobile dating, emerging adults often show to lack the necessary digital literacy skills to navigate these platforms in an empowering manner. Finally, research on mobile dating is highly fragmented across theoretical perspectives, underscoring the need for a more integrated framework. Future recommendations are offered in conclusion to advance the field.</jats:p>
