A Job Well Done

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>After Japan surrendered and the war ended, Trautman knew mass demobilization would result in reduced Army funding for libraries. Army Library Service had reached its pinnacle. As veterans became civilians, they would continue their reading habit. Trautman’s goal was to ensure all people had access to books. He had done this for millions of soldiers during the war, and now he wanted to do this for the American public. Before separating from the Army, Trautman accepted an invitation from the American Booksellers Association to participate in a ceremony at the White House to present President Truman with hundreds of books for the White House Library. Trautman also donated Army library materials, including Armed Services Editions, to the FDR Presidential Library. Upon completing his discharge paperwork, Trautman became general manager of Omnibook magazine, which printed five abridged best-selling books per month and had proven to be wildly popular with troops.</jats:p>
