Abstract

Abstract
This chapter examines the future of sanctuary in the United States by recounting the 2026 Minnesota immigration confrontation and showing how violence, protest, and faith leadership reignite debates over sacred resistance. It describes federal raids, civilian deaths, and nationwide protests while illustrating how clergy, activists, and ordinary residents mobilized moral witness and revived sanctuary traditions rooted in hospitality and solidarity. The chapter then assesses sanctuary’s prospects by drawing on historical precedent and arguing that mass deportation policies rely on xenophobic narratives, propaganda, and legal expansion rather than evidence of public safety. It analyzes challenges facing religious and municipal sanctuary, including federal incursions into sacred spaces, declining church capacity, strategic adaptation by faith networks, and defiant sanctuary policies maintained by cities. Finally, the chapter argues that sanctuary endures because it educates the public, builds coalitions, inspires prophetic action, affirms human dignity, challenges state power, and sustains faith-based solidarity with migrants.
