Abstract
Abstract
The Samurai in Twelve Lives by Constantine Nomikos Vaporis provides an in-depth look at the lives of samurai during Japan’s Tokugawa period (1600–1868), using individual biographies to explore the diverse experiences and roles of these warriors during a time dominated by peace. Vaporis debunks common stereotypes of samurai as solely warriors bound by a strict code of bushido, highlighting instead their complex lives as bureaucrats, scholars, and artists. Through the life stories of both famous and lesser-known figures, the book illustrates how samurai adapted to the evolving political and social conditions of the time, transitioning from battlefield heroes to civil administrators and an under- or unemployed educated elite. The biographies span a wide range of samurai status and experiences, from daimyo to low-ranking or masterless samurai, offering a nuanced view of the social group as a whole. The book also explores the challenges faced by samurai in maintaining their status and identity in a society increasingly marked by peace, urbanization, commercialization, and the demands of bureaucratic service.
