Abstract
Abstract
More than 260 municipalities across the United States have declared racism a public health crisis. Indeed, it is difficult to imagine eliminating the pervasive and persistent racial and ethnic health disparities in the United States without understanding how policies and practices rooted in racism are embedded throughout health care and then working to address them. This book describes a holistic approach to advancing antiracism and achieving racial health equity as a strategic priority and intentional practice in healthcare organizations. The book’s seven chapters describe the design of an overall organizational strategy or antiracism action plan, including specific approaches to promote organization-wide engagement in the active work of antiracism; the development of tools for embedding equity into quality measurement (clinical equity measures dashboards and reporting tools); the establishment of mechanisms to embed equity into care delivery (redesign of care delivery to address social drivers of health, addressing bias in clinician notes, emerging digital health challenges); the implementation of antiracist business structures and practices (human resources, the supply chain); the development of antiracist leadership and learning at all levels throughout the organization; engagement with multisector partners and communities to address racism and improve the health of populations; and the importance of contributing to innovation in payor models. Brief Spotlight stories provide a close-up look at healthcare leaders and organizations across the country that are implementing antiracism and racial health equity initiatives within their organizations.
