A Preacher, a Banker, a Judge, and a Quaker

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>This chapter focuses on the experiences of the Reverend Charles Grandison Finney of New York City; Judge Charles Ewing, New Jersey’s chief justice; John Pintard, a banker in New York City; and Deborah Norris Logan, a Quaker historian who lived in Stenton Mansion near Philadelphia. It shows that cholera’s impact was not as selective as supposed and that even some elites came to appreciate the disease as more serious and indiscriminate than imagined. The chapter gives an overview of the first wave’s abatement in the Northeast and how impactful the disease was on the lives of diverse peoples. Health authorities in New York and Philadelphia, though, continued to adhere to their preconceived notions about the disease.</jats:p>
