Abstract

Abstract
This book addresses how severe picky eating and Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) create daily conflict, hinder healthy development, and strain family functioning. It explains how well-intentioned restrictive eating accommodations sustain a child’s avoidance and clarifies why shifting parental responses is essential for change. The book presents SPACE-ARFID, a parent-based therapeutic method that adapts the evidence-supported SPACE model to empower caregivers to reduce accommodation without placing demands on the child. It outlines practical steps for identifying unhelpful patterns, restoring mealtime structure, and managing challenges through supportive communication and steady parental leadership. Finally, the book illustrates these strategies with case examples and guided exercises that help parents respond constructively, involve their child appropriately, and recognize each incremental step toward progress.
