Score Study in 1

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Working bar by bar through one of Tchaikovsky’s most beloved waltzes, the author takes the reader through the steps of score study, including motivic, phrasal, and harmonic analysis, leading to instrumentation and an exploration of interpretive issues. Using this detailed information, the reader is taught about conducting a work in one pulse to a bar. There are links to scores and performances, to references to other works by Tchaikovsky, and to his family correspondence. Conducting questions are embedded in the text, bridging the gap between theoretical and practical applications. The concept of Tchaikovsky’s musical DNA is raised in connection to getting a grasp of the composer’s style and compositional method.</jats:p>
