Abstract

Abstract
This book examines the complex process of supporting those experiencing acute crisis episodes. Crisis is ubiquitous, and the experience is life changing. Accidents, violent crime, intimate partner abuse, and sudden loss of a loved one are some areas of application of Roberts’s seven-stage crisis intervention model. When addressed effectively, the experience of crisis can transform the life of the individual. Trauma is closely associated with crisis; thus, this text explores a trauma-informed care approach to supporting those in a crisis state. Roberts’s seven-stage crisis intervention model is detailed, providing a comprehensive roadmap for addressing the crisis experience. This text offers evidence-based approaches woven into the stages of crisis intervention—cognitive-behavioral therapy and strengths perspective, as well as crisis intervention teams for first responders responding to individuals within the community experiencing acute states of crisis and those experiencing mental health crisis. The assessment, crisis intervention, and trauma treatment (ACT) model is detailed as a response to community-based crisis. Additionally, detailed approaches are provided for addressing crisis experienced by first responders. The stress, trauma, and resilience (STAR) program outlines how to implement brief emotional support teams (BEST) to support medical professionals who experience the ongoing stress of providing emergency care, end-of-life care, and trauma care. The book concludes with examination of crisis intervention best practices, designs and procedures of evaluating crisis intervention as well as future research in crisis intervention.
