Epilogue: Our Lady of Europa and the Saudi Mosque

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>The epilogue beings with the opening of the Mosque of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques on Europa Point at the southern tip of Gibraltar. The mosque was funded by the Saudi royal family, and its opening was an elaborate pageant. Several speakers reflected on Gibraltar’s history since the Umayyad landing in 711. Many also pointed to the recent renovation of the shrine of Our Lady of Europa a short distance away. They suggested that the two places of worship, almost side by side, signaled that Gibraltar had become an almost uniquely tolerant place. The epilogue cites this moment as part of a long pattern in Gibraltar in which monuments acquire layers of meaning as successive generations build, destroy, reconstruct, and repurpose them.</jats:p>
