Maternal Pain and Postpartum Recovery

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Pregnancy is a period of physical and emotional vulnerability and one that is often complicated by various acute and chronic pain conditions. Profound and long-lasting changes in metabolism, hormone regulation, biomechanics, and psychosocial stress that alter pain perception and modulation during pregnancy increase the risk that peripartum pain conditions will persist postpartum. Knowledge of the contributing mechanisms can guide prevention and management. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of the biological, psychological, and social aspects of pain throughout pregnancy and postpartum, with a focus on common pain syndromes, acute to chronic pain transition, and assessment and treatment disparities. Evidence-based, multidisciplinary approaches to improving maternal outcomes and long-term health are highlighted.</jats:p>
