Abstract
Abstract
This chapter presents a cartographic analysis of the evolution of French clausal syntax, with a particular focus on the featural makeup of phase-edges which are subject to significant diachronic variation. It is argued that the relevant parametric changes should be characterized in terms of the ‘size’ of functional heads they affect and that, in the history of French, phase-edges show striking uniformity in their makeup, with concomitant changes at the CP-, vP-, and DP-edges. Throughout the chapter, the French data are used as an evaluation tool for a number of the most significant proposed principles of change which have been put forward within the cartographic framework.
