Abstract
Abstract
This book represents a novel state-of-the-art contribution in European comparative welfare state research, employing the original theoretical perspective of the welfare commons logic. It serves several functions. First, it includes a novel theoretical and conceptual framework to capture the dynamic evolution of Europe’s diverse welfare systems. Second, it represents a historical and detailed account of key policy developments across ten country cases and the European Union, informed by an up-to-date dynamic assessment of welfare state performance in terms of employment, poverty, and fiscal sustainability. Third, it advances an explanation of the political drivers of reforms and, in conclusion, reflects more normatively where Europe’s welfare states require further action to match fiscal sustainability to inclusive growth. Last but not least, the book introduces a new generation of European welfare scholars.
