<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>The chapter offers a brief context to the emergence of unconditional cash transfers to women in India. It locates the book’s normative basis in social reproduction feminism, especially the wages for housework campaign of the 1970s. This chapter offers an overview of social reproduction theory over the past several decades and the traction it acquired in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic with renewed proposals for recognising and redistributing care work. The chapter then offers an overview of the three parts of the book, namely, the normative section outlining the case for unconditional cash transfers; the empirical sections covering the rollout of unconditional cash transfers in Goa, Assam, and West Bengal; and the final section, in which the regulatory implications of such recognition of care work are addressed.</jats:p>
