Abstract
Abstract
This chapter discusses the role of peace processes and transitional justice in achieving durable solutions to internal displacement and the importance of durable solutions for securing peace and justice. Peace efforts and processes to redress large-scale human rights violations often play an instrumental role in establishing the conditions for internally displaced persons (IDPs) to progressively regain access to their rights and have human rights violations suffered recognized. The chapter argues that peace processes and transitional justice measures can contribute to, but do not automatically usher in, solutions for IDPs. In tandem, durable solutions to internal displacement are a key component of peace and justice but are one among many factors affecting peace-building. But, while there has been increased attention to internal displacement in peace agreements and transitional justice mechanisms over the past 15 years, the rights, needs, and interests of IDPs do not fully permeate peace-building and transitional justice initiatives, and evidence of IDP engagement in these processes remains limited. The impact of participation by IDPs in these processes on durable solutions is therefore difficult to determine.
