It highlights Bradstreet’s early feminist impulses, her spiritual devotion, and the power of her elegies, love lyrics, meditations, and autobiographical writing that shape conversations about early American literature. The book emphasizes how her stature persists across nearly four centuries through both her notable achievements and the controversies that continue to complicate her reception. It demonstrates how leading American poets use new poems and essays to situate Bradstreet within diverse literary, cultural, political, and theological frameworks that call for ongoing reinterpretation. Finally, the book shows how Bradstreet’s work continues to resonate, challenge, frustrate, astonish, and inspire readers and writers who confront her evolving legacy.
