Abstract
Abstract
The Reform Crisis, 1830–1832 is a substantially new interpretation of a pivotal period in modern British political history. It examines how these years came to be experienced, understood, and remembered as ones of national crisis. Rather than focusing on the causes and outcomes of the reform legislation, this book analyses the origins, experiences, and consequences of the wider crisis, which saw parliamentary reform contested amidst acute material distress, international instability, and a cholera pandemic. It argues that this intense period of agitation drew men, women, and communities across the United Kingdom and beyond into a powerful national movement. The widespread experiences of this dramatic and emotionally charged crisis were consequential. They cemented new forms of political argument and popular activism and established the memory of the reform crisis as a turning point in Britain’s political development.
