<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>This third edition of Treaty Interpretation explains, with new and updated material, the rules for interpretation of treaties. It gives examples of their application in international and national jurisdictions. The rules which are the subject of this book are those codified in the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. They apply to virtually all treaties which may be encountered in an international context and also within national legal systems where treaties have an impact on a large and growing range of matters. The book explains the rules and gives an account of how these rules have been, and are to be, applied in practice. The codified rules of treaty interpretation have led to a considerable body of case law in international courts and arbitral tribunals. Selected case law, combined with the history and analysis of the rules of treaty interpretation, is included to provide a basis for understanding this most important task in the application of treaties internationally and within national systems of law. The book provides guidance for any lawyer who ever has to consider international legal matters, and increasingly any lawyer whose work involves domestic legislation with any international connection, whether a treaty provision is explicitly in issue or is the source of the relevant legislation. This book provides a guide to interpreting treaties properly in accordance with the modern rules, taking into account emerging trends and evolutions in approaches over the years.</jats:p>
