Iberian Crossroads

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Iberian Crossroads unveils for the first time Spain’s rich contributions to the birth of the modern world. More than a country confined within the territorial boundaries of the Iberian Peninsula, the book shows how in the “long” nineteenth century Spain was immersed in a dense web of global connections spanning the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The emergence of citizenship and new constitutional cultures, the movement of slaves and political exiles across national borders, and the changing imperial dynamics are but a small sample of world phenomena in which Spain’s role was key, a role which remains largely unexplored by historians. In delving into the Spanish involvement in world history, the book also sheds light on the multiple and complex ways in which Europe experienced globalization. Against the tendency of examining the long nineteenth century through the traditional lens of the Great Powers, the case of Spain provides a fresh, alternative angle from which to appreciate Europe’s dynamic interactions with the world. Iberian Crossroads offers, in short, a timely contribution to the greater task of transcending isolated national histories as well as a manifesto calling for a more plural and diverse history.</jats:p>
