Abstract
<p> In this article, we propose a new approach for describing and understanding knots and links in a 3-manifold through the use of an embedded non-orientable surface. Specifically, we define a plat-like representation based on this non-orientable surface. The method applies to manifolds of the form <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" alttext="upper M equals script upper H union Subscript phi Baseline script upper C left-parenthesis upper U right-parenthesis"> <mml:semantics> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>M</mml:mi> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mi class="MJX-tex-caligraphic" mathvariant="script">H</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:msub> <mml:mo> ∪ </mml:mo> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mi> φ </mml:mi> </mml:mrow> </mml:msub> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mi class="MJX-tex-caligraphic" mathvariant="script">C</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:mo stretchy="false">(</mml:mo> <mml:mi>U</mml:mi> <mml:mo stretchy="false">)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:annotation encoding="application/x-tex">M=\mathcal H\cup _{\varphi } \mathcal C(U)</mml:annotation> </mml:semantics> </mml:math> </inline-formula> , where <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" alttext="script upper H"> <mml:semantics> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mi class="MJX-tex-caligraphic" mathvariant="script">H</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:annotation encoding="application/x-tex">\mathcal H</mml:annotation> </mml:semantics> </mml:math> </inline-formula> is a handlebody, <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" alttext="script upper C left-parenthesis upper U right-parenthesis"> <mml:semantics> <mml:mrow> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mi class="MJX-tex-caligraphic" mathvariant="script">C</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:mo stretchy="false">(</mml:mo> <mml:mi>U</mml:mi> <mml:mo stretchy="false">)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:annotation encoding="application/x-tex">\mathcal C(U)</mml:annotation> </mml:semantics> </mml:math> </inline-formula> is the mapping cylinder of the orientable two sheeted covering of a non-orientable closed surface <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" alttext="upper U"> <mml:semantics> <mml:mi>U</mml:mi> <mml:annotation encoding="application/x-tex">U</mml:annotation> </mml:semantics> </mml:math> </inline-formula> and <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" alttext="phi colon partial-differential script upper H right-arrow partial-differential script upper C left-parenthesis upper U right-parenthesis"> <mml:semantics> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi> φ </mml:mi> <mml:mo>:</mml:mo> <mml:mi mathvariant="normal"> ∂ </mml:mi> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mi class="MJX-tex-caligraphic" mathvariant="script">H</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:mo stretchy="false"> → </mml:mo> <mml:mi mathvariant="normal"> ∂ </mml:mi> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mi class="MJX-tex-caligraphic" mathvariant="script">C</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:mo stretchy="false">(</mml:mo> <mml:mi>U</mml:mi> <mml:mo stretchy="false">)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:annotation encoding="application/x-tex">\varphi :\partial \mathcal H\to \partial \mathcal C(U)</mml:annotation> </mml:semantics> </mml:math> </inline-formula> is an attaching homeomorphism.
