Beliefs and practices in paraprofessional translators’ work

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>This chapter makes an empirically grounded contribution to the evolving understanding of paraprofessional translation work. First, drawing on forty-four semi-structured interviews with a broad range of employees and managers working in five organizations in different sectors, we identify six distinctive approaches to paraprofessional translation: each underpinned by a different set of beliefs and practices. We then illustrate how they are influenced not only by management policies but also by three major factors: (a) the characteristics of the paraprofessional translator, namely their identity, organizational role, seniority and language skills, (b) organizational context, and (c) the translation type — small-t and big-T translation — a novel analytical distinction which we propose for the paraprofessional context.</jats:p>
