<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p> John Langshaw Austin (1911–1960) is considered one of the most influential representatives of postwar Oxford <jats:italic>ordinary language</jats:italic> philosophy. Among his main contributions to the philosophy of language is the analysis of performative utterances and its subsequent development into a general conception of “language as action,” which gave rise to <jats:italic>speech act theory</jats:italic> . </jats:p>
