Abstract

The incidence of diabetes in childhood has gradually been increasing for many years in the United Kingdom and globally. Type 1 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes in paediatric care. Type 2 diabetes is increasing in prevalence in the paediatric population. A nutritional assessment should be conducted at diagnosis and each dietetic annual review. Children and young people with diabetes should be screened for psychological comorbidities, including disordered eating behaviours. Living with diabetes includes several challenging self‐management behaviours. The paediatric dietitian's role in the management of diabetes is to support the child and their family to optimise nutritional status whilst maximising Time in Range. Advances in early identification of Type 1 diabetes risk have the potential to expand dietitians' involvement in pre‐symptomatic care pathways, including nutritional counselling and family‐centred support.
