Abstract
Childhood weight management requires an understanding of the considerations different from those in adults. This chapter provides a basic understanding of childhood obesity from a simplified bio‐psycho‐social perspective and explores the dietetic knowledge and skills required for management in a clinical setting. Identification of the nutritional and dietetic diagnosis will stem from a thorough assessment, which expresses the nutritional problem, aetiology and signs/symptoms. It is important in childhood weight management that the programme is multicomponent and family‐based, where parents/caregivers are seen as role models for healthier lifestyle behaviours. Management should encompass diet, physical activity and screen time. Weight and body mass index (BMI) changes are the most frequently used clinical outcome measures. For adolescents and those in the very severe BMI range, weight loss may be required, and they should be advised.
