Abstract
Burn injury is estimated to be responsible for 180,000 deaths annually, worldwide. Outcomes for patients following severe burns are improving. The process of rehabilitation is long and involves all members of the multidisciplinary team (MDT). Anthropometric, dietary and other assessments should be conducted using the same methods as for any other patient group. Regular assessment of anthropometry helps guide nutritional management. Many of the metabolic and physiological responses to burn injuries have nutritional consequences which pre‐dispose patients to protein energy malnutrition. Nutrition support strategies can result in a combination of oral, enteral and parenteral feeding through the course of the patient's treatment period. The dietitian has the responsibility to maintain up‐to‐date clinical knowledge and reflect current evidence‐based practice in this area, as well as lead on service development for nutrition within the burns MDT and contribute to research and audit.
